Softyak is a collection of 12 designs by Marie Wallin using one of Rowan’s new yarns for the season, Soft yak. The collection is influenced by 1970’s fashion, inspiring designs which are elegant, feminine and easy to wear. The colours are rich but muted, making the collection suitable for all year round wear. The collection is suitable for knitters of all abilities, with designs ranging from simple stocking stitch batwing tops to more complicated cable and lace stitches.
After designing knitwear for more than 30 years, Marie Wallin has an instantly recognisable style, thanks to her love of intricately patterned fabrics. When Marie joined Rowan as Head Designer in 2005, she became fully immersed in the hand knitting world after working in machine knitting and commercial design. She spent the next decade overseeing all creative aspects of the Rowand brand, not only in the knitwear designs but also the photo shoots, styling and art direction. As well as being the main designer for the Rowan magazine and seasonal brochures, Marie was also heavily involved with the development and selection of new yarns and colors.
Over this time Marie became known for her colourful designs, inspired by Fair Isle and folk art. She also created many of Rowan’s best-loved crochet designs, pushing the craft to new limits. After leaving Rowan in 2014 she launched her own label, continuing to explore her love of complex patterns through handknits. Her kits and patterns attract a huge following and she teaches all over the UK. She continues to design for Rowan too and cites designers with a love of color and pattern as an inspiration.
